Il y a hors-jeu lorsqu’un joueur se trouve dans une position dans laquelle il n’est pas autorisé à recevoir le ballon d’un coéquipier, car cela lui procurerait un avantage indu. Un joueur est hors-jeu quand il participe activement au jeu et se trouvait en position de hors-jeu au moment où le ballon a été joué/touché par un coéquipier (délibérément ou accidentellement).

Il existe trois types d’infraction de hors-jeu :

Si un joueur est sanctionné pour un hors-jeu, un coup franc indirect est accordé à l’autre équipe à l’endroit où l’infraction a été commise (cela peut être dans la propre moitié de terrain du joueur si celui-ci se trouvait en position de hors-jeu au moment où le ballon a été joué par un coéquipier, puis a interféré avec le jeu après être revenu dans sa propre moitié de terrain).
